Yokoji Zen Mountain Center

Yokoji has been evacuated due to a forest fire that spread from Mountain Center by HWY 74 and 243. We had time to get things together and all the residents and the animals are out safely. We currently don't know if the fire has gone through Apple Canyon or not. We will keep Facebook and the this blog updated.

We have been worried about everyone and the center. Thank you for posting your status. Our thoughts and prayers are for swift suppression of the fire.

The websites on inciweb and calfire still do not report major structures gone so am holding out hope that Yokoji and the Pine springs camp are intact. It was heartbreaking to see Apache peak rock face behind a wall of fire yesterday evening . My thoughts are all with each of you. I am here at the dome in MC if you need anything. Chanting for all the animals trapped up in the canyon, sending energy to all the fire fighters and flyers who are targeting this amazing fire dragon.

So sorry for your discomfort and dislocation, so sorry for all of the wildlife. I heard that the fire reached Apple Canyon last night, but there are a lot of rumors swirling like the wind (e.g., Mtn Ctr destroyed, but TC says that’s not true), so I hope that that one was wrong also. Namaste, Yozan

My husband is a SD firefighter on the wildfires, and we’ve been hoping to come visit Yokoji for years now. Love + light to you all and to all our fellow firefighters…we will meet you in peaceful times soon!

Jim……Are there any needs to met right now? as you know, we are fairly close by and are anxious to help if needed in anyway

  • Yugen:

    16 Jul 2013 12:27:16

Thanks Jim—all the residents and animals are housed for the time being. We’re really just waiting to find out the extent of the damage. They have a damage assessment team on the ground, so it’s possible we’ll hear something later today. I’ve been liaising with our insurers to get them on the ready, but until we know how bad the fire hit the canyon, there isn’t much we can do. Thank you for the offer, though.

Love to you each and all (including the raccoons, cougars, deer and goldfinches that were lining up waiting for the fire crews!

The official word is that there is no damage to Yokoji. Our neighbors weren’t as lucky, however. It sounds like the fire fighters did an amazing job protecting as much of the property in the canyon as they could. http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3516/

Nice one sangha – that clearing and sweat and assemblies of bodhisattvas has saved the day. I need a good drink now… And so will you all.

Phew. Sweat and prayers. If the winds shift, and/or you need it, there is extra Thermo-gel available, not far away in YV/JT.

It was good to read on several official sites that Yokoji had been spared of any damage from the fire. Can anyone confirm that?

  • Bill Butler:

    17 Jul 2013 07:55:03

I’m very pleased that damage assessment is reporting no losses to the center. This is certainly due in part to the endless hours of mitigation work going back many years, especially the removal of trees killed and weakened by the bark beetles. I have so much gratitude for all who did this work. For me, it’s a time to reflect on what’s really important, and just now, it’s the human effort, often anonymous and unnoticed, that can make such a difference in so many places in our society.

  • Henrike Jishin:

    17 Jul 2013 10:08:22

I’m very happy to know that you all are save. Dave Sensei just did let us know that the center was also saved. As Bill mentioned probably not in the last place thanks to all the maintenance work the woods were given by Yokoji. But I also think it’s saved because the center can not be missed yet. It’s needed to help our world change into a better world. Great. Much love and supportive hug for you all! Henrike Jishin

There were many summers when we saw the smoke from the wildfires nearby knowing that one day it would be Mountain Center’s turn. We would clear the undergrowth and have fire drills and listen to the news of nearby fires. The fact that Yoko-ji is safe, is the result of the wisdom, foresight and hard work of Tenshin Roshi and those through the years who helped him.
    Thank you, Tenshin.

  • Jindo:

    17 Jul 2013 12:53:29

Well, I was relieved to see this:

“One place that escaped unscathed, was the Zen Mountain Center, a Buddhist retreat toward the end of the canyon road. “We really thought it was gone,” Miller said, but “The crews hung on and saved it.”” (http://blog.pe.com/2013/07/16/mountain-center-fire-destroys-seven-homes-12-outbuildings/).

….I hope the winds do not shift or anything else happens to put ZMC back in harm’s way before they have the fire completely controlled. Last I saw, the fire was less than half contained. Let’s all continue to watch for updates and leave comments until we get the word that they are certain the fire danger has passed. Many thanks to Bill and Jishin for the news they shared. And a HUGE thank you to the fire crews who “hung on and saved it”!!!

  • Yugen:

    17 Jul 2013 14:04:36

Tenshin Roshi and Jokai were allowed up briefly to the center and have confirmed there is no damage. The fire came all the way up to our fire abatement lines and the forestry work over the past few years proved to be extremely important in stopping the spread. That and the amazing dedication of the fire crews. There are still spot fire burning near the buildings and the fire crew were expecting flare-ups later today, so we are far from in the clear, but things are still in our favor. Jokai took some pictures, so hopefully we’ll have something visual to post later. There is a fire crew posted at the center to deal with the ongoing protection of the valley.

Dave Sensei told us last night about the fire – I’m so glad to hear the Centre was saved. Let’s hope & pray it stays that way. Sensei did say you’re ‘not out of the woods yet’ – yes those WERE his words!

So all the hard work on the fire break was crucial. Wonderful.

With much love from Miranda (Wayu number 2)

As son as the fire started, (at only 25 acres), I immediately thought first & foremost of the status of Yokoji, & whether you were in harms ways, and/or had to be evacutateed. As well, my thoughts, blessings & compassion goes out to all those is harms ways, as well as all sentient beings living in the wildlife habitat of the incredible forest. Please keep us in touch, as to whether Yokoji remains out of harms way or is anyway damaged, As for one will offer my servieces, to travel & help rebuild anything that hopefully doesn’t fall in the fires path. But only a few hours later, the news said, the fire had exploded to 24,000 acres. that is when I became worried. YOur Posts are integral to our peace of mind. thanks for posting and please keep us informed. Gassho.

Good fortune following good effort! I am very glad beautiful Yokoji continues.

I have many pleasant memories from 20 years past.

Remember “the all is on fire” – Shakyamuni’s fire sermon. May your zazen be wholehearted.

    With love,

I am deeply grateful to hear that you are all well and Yokoji is still there. Your hard work clearing the area over the years has certainly paid off. Thank you, Tenshin Roshi, and all the many who have worked so hard to keep this wonderful place alive and well.

As I hold all of you in my thoughts through this evolving crisis, I wonder what you may need during this huge disruption and will you be posting a list of these needs so we might give practical help? (For instance, I could offer accommodations for 2-3 during the evacuation. Or a monetary contribution to a “Fire Fund” to help defray the additional costs and inevitable lost income due to the evacuation might be more practical.) I hope you will let us know how we can help going forward. And, above all, I share the gratitude for your well-being already expressed by others.

  • Yugen:

    20 Jul 2013 10:14:46

Thanks Greta. We want to wait until the fire is done before asking for help—right now we can’t be sure what we will need help with. For sure, there will be an ask for help in the next week or two so we really appreciate everyone’s offers. All the residents are comfortably accommodated, but thank you for thinking of it.
