As we move into August, approaching the midway point of Summer Interim Period, the mountain is bathed in warmth and light. We have had an eventful and fulfilling summer so far, recently hosting a retreat during which our affiliate groups came together in early July. This gave our members who practice with other groups the opportunity to come up and experience Yokoji as well as connect with other members. Later in the month we were honored to host a wedding for Maria Itsuro Davydova and Esteban Flores. It was a great success and everyone enjoyed the stunning surroundings and the celebratory ambiance.
At the end of July we hosted our summer Beginner’s Mind Sesshin, which was also a great success. This weekend retreat is an ideal opportunity for beginners and experienced practitioners alike to deepen their practice. It gives a wonderful taste of what sesshin is like, serving as a primer for people before committing to an in-depth 7-day sesshin. As always, we find that we get out of practice what we put in and so our small community continues to care for and maintain our property throughout the summer months so that we are all set for Fall Training Period in September.
We extend a heartfelt invitation to all to participate in ways that are mutually supportive. We welcome part-time participation in sesshin and appreciate volunteer contributions on the weekends, especially during guest season. As we engage every opportunity to be awake now, realizing the gift of this traditional training model, we also raise up the important contributions of practice in daily life with family and work commitments. For those who wish to renew and reinvigorate engagement in these areas, we hope that our presence and offering will be supportive to you in your efforts.
