Thank you to those of you who came on Saturday to help out and those who came up on Sunday to meet and discuss the future direction of Yokoji. As an outcome of the weekend, we have decided to go ahead with the same pattern for the next month and a half. If the weather permits, we hope to meet every Saturday from now until the end of October for a 9-5 work day. If you can attend, please come along and bring lunch and water with you. If anyone would like to spend the night, we can make arrangements for that. We will go back to the regular 9:30am - 1:00pm Sunday schedule starting this Sunday. Again, this is weather dependent, and if the weather should get bad before the end of October, then we will change plans accordingly.

One of the ideas that came up during the meeting on Sunday (thank you, Meagan) was to let the sangha know exactly what we need to move forward over the winter. One of our most pressing needs is to find a property for the residents along with Tenshin Roshi and his family over the winter months. This period will most likely start at the beginning of November and run through April or May next year, and possibly longer.

The ideal property would be as follows:

  • A place with two or more buildings, one which could house a few residents and the other which could house a family of three adults and three kids. Ideally it would be four bedroom, or at least have four discrete sleeping spaces.
  • One of the buildings would be able to sit around 25 people in a garage or living space of some sort.
  • Adequate parking for around 25 people on or nearby the property.
  • Within a 50 mile radius of Yokoji

This may be a tall order, but if anyone knows of any property that may be a close fit to the profile above, please let us know. We would want to be there for at least 6 months. A year lease would most likely be too much to commit to right now. We are open to regular rental properties, although for the next few years our main struggle is going to be keeping enough money coming in to meet expenses, so we have a limited budget in this regard. If we found a place that would work and we knew the cost, we could start planning to see if it would be feasible. The best possible scenario for us would be to be given a property by someone for a period of time for little or no money. As a small Zen community, one thing we are very good at is taking care of a place. If there is a property that needs to be looked after over the winter and it matches the above profile, we might be a perfect fit.

If anyone has any leads, please get in touch with us. Thank you.

are you still digging? and if so, do you need good shovels?

We could use good shovels, good shovelers and a place to put those shovels and the resident shovelers in the winter…

If only my over-large rental in South Carolina were a tiny bit closer. . .but it ain’t. I’ll put the word out in the Desert for sure, though.
